Coaching Certifications

We encourage all coaches to complete their USA Baseball online certifications. To get started, register at SportDev.org — this is your first step toward earning FREE certifications.

The certification process includes short instructional videos and tutorials featuring Division I college coaches, MLB players, and professional staff, followed by brief quizzes for each module.

• In-house coaches should complete the A Certification.

• Travel and 10U In-House coaches should complete the B Certification, with C Certification recommended where applicable.

These programs provide valuable tools and knowledge to strengthen your understanding of the game—covering offense, defense, pitching, catching, and how to navigate a wide variety of in-season situations. While the process requires some time and dedication, the benefits to our coaches, players, and the organization are well worth it.

Volunteer Coaching Procedures

Individuals interested in volunteering for coaching positions within our travel or in-house programs should follow the instructions in the "Create an Account" section on our website.

All coaches, MTBSA board members, and volunteers who directly interact with players must complete required criminal background checks and obtain state clearances in accordance with Pennsylvania law before participating in any MTBSA-related activities.

• Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Check

• FBI Criminal History Background Check or Volunteer Affidavit

All required documents must be emailed as PDFs to your league director and the Safety Director before your first practice. We recommend keeping copies for your records, as many organizations accept the same clearances.

IMPORTANT: Clearances remain valid for five years. Please renew before they expire.

Criminal History Records Check
This clearance is free and valid for five years. Complete your check at the Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History website.

Child Abuse History Check
This clearance is also free and valid for five years. You will need to create an account and complete the clearance from the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Portal.

FBI Criminal History Background Check OR Volunteer Affidavit

• If you have lived outside Pennsylvania at any time in the past 10 years, you must complete a fingerprint-based FBI Criminal Background Check. There is a fee; MTBSA will reimburse you, though donations are appreciated. Details can be found at the Keep Kids Safe website:

• If you have not lived outside Pennsylvania in the past 10 years, you may complete a Volunteer Affidavit instead
